Should you be offended?

I was reading my tweets today and I came across one where the writer describing how she was upset by a Subway commercial.  In the commercial, average people are seen eating fast food.  The scenes that follow show these same people breaking a diving board as they jumps, breaking a chair as they sit, etc.

The point Subway was trying to make is that eating these foods would weigh you down and cause you to gain weight.

The writer of the blog felt the commercial was poking fun at fat people and as a result was offended.  What do you think?  Have you seen the commercial?

The writer felt that the ad was saying it is ok to make fun of fat people and compared it to making fun of someone based on their nationality or skin color.

I really think that analogy was going too far.  No one can help the color of their skin, their nationality, or any physical or mental challenges.  These things just are and so no, I don't believe someone should poke fun at their expense.

On the other hand, being overweight is avoidable for about 97% of the overweight population.  There are very few people who legitimately cannot lose weight.  For everyone else, weight problems are self imposed.  No, I don't think you should be made fun of but I think you should have you hand slapped for making bad food choices.

If you have a weight problem, the last place you should be eating is McDonald's.  If you make bad food choices, be prepared to gain weight.  I think that is what Subway was trying to say in a vivid way.

Maybe their message was unclear but then again, maybe some folks are too sensitive.  So I ask you, what do you think of the Subway commercial?
